Paper Piecing Water Birds

A few weeks back, I designed this LOON ON THE LAKE paper piecing pattern.

Every year 2 loons inhabit the lake near my cabin in upper Wisconsin. I love to listen to them singing at night.

I liked my loon block so much that I decided to design more “birds on the lake”. This is SWAN ON THE LAKE. The dragonflies add some depth to the block.

GOOSE ON THE LAKE reminds me of all the Canada Geese that come to visit in the fall.

And finally MALLARD ON THE LAKE. It’s always exciting to see my first mallard of Spring.

I haven’t actually used my blocks in any projects. I plan to make a set of pillows for my cabin. I would also like to add more birds to this collection so I could complete a full quilt. I am working on a PELICAN right now. Can you help me think of any other “water birds”? They don’t have to be specifically northwoods. Which is your favorite block?

  1. All of your bird blocks are so pretty. I love them all. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be the Swan on the Lake block. All birds are so awesome! Have a great day!

  2. I normally don’t like paper piecing and these do look challenging–but–
I love them, so when a paper does come available I will be tempted to get it!!
I live in Fl and we have blue herons here on the water alot–so that might be a nice one and pink flamingo’s would make a pretty block with them standing in water!!
    enjoy, di

  3. Being from MN, the Loon is definitely my favorite. His/Her eye just needs to be red.

How about some Egrets or Herons? Or Pelicans?

  4. Great blocks! I don’t live around the water so I don’t know too many water birds. I am sure you will come up with many more designs. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!

  5. Egret, Heron, sandpipers (always more than one-usually in a group), gulls, cormerant, eagles, rosette spoonbill. There is another big Bird that eats fish that I have to get back to you. Some of these waterborne may not be on a cold lake in upper Wisconsin but the are all around where I live and the are water birds! I am going crazy trying to think off the one the scouts built homes for.

  6. Love the water birds, esp. the loon. Here in Nebraska it is Sandhill crane season. They are totally awesome to see and to hear.

  7. I have some really neat photos of waterfowl. Please check back with me if you are interested in viewing any of my pictures.

  8. I am so smitten with your loon!! I lived in Minnesota when I was a little girl and we used to rent a lake cabin in the summer. I still remember the sound of the loons at night. 🙂

  9. These are awesome! I’m a big fan of loons, and miss hearing/seeing them, especially when they’d swim around with their babies on their backs.

  10. I love your little flock!! I have a couple of bird suggestions for you. My grandpa was a hunter and frequently would go to northern Wisconsin and Canada (I live in Madison!). He would hunt wood ducks and they are beautiful and would make for a fun paper pieced pattern. A few other birds–> Great Blue Heron, Sandhill Crane and an Eagle!

    1. Hi Kristin! I was checking out your “Gumdrops” website. I love that you are from Madison. I spoke at the Mad City Quilt Guild last year. Such a sweet group of ladies!
