The Winter Blues Blog Hop and Give Away with Marney

Great thanks to Carla from “Creatin’ in the Sticks” for all her work arranging today’s Winter Blues blog hop. Since blue has always been my favorite color, it is a joy to participate in this blog. Please don’t forget to leave a comment to participate in my Give Away.

If you are like me, you stave off those winter doldrums by sewing. Let’s start with 2 of the paper pieced CARDINAL BLOCKS from my CARDINAL TABLE RUNNER pattern.

I’m using these two cardinals.

I’ve been wanting to sew some new winter pillows and these blocks will be perfect! My CUTE AND CLEVER FARM AND FOREST ANIMALS book has an adorable 12″ pillow pattern.

See that cute little bunny pillow on the cover of the book? That’s the pillow I will be making with my cardinals.

I found this lovely blue sparkly fabric at JoAnn Fabrics.

I love how they turned out! Here they are in my living room. The little red berries are tiny buttons.

This is the CARDINAL WALL HANGING pattern in my ETSY SHOP if you are interested.

I will be GIVING AWAY a digital copy of this pattern to one lucky person who LEAVES A COMMENT BELOW. The winner will be announced the week after the Winter Blues Blog Hop.

Thanks so much for visiting our hop! Please visit the other bloggers participating.

  1. I am originally from the East Coast and now live in Oregon. The cardinal has always been my favorite bird, so cheerful to see in the snow! We do not have them in Oregon, and I would love to make something with cardinals in it to make me feel as if I had traveled back home to years gone by!

  2. Love the cardinals. I need to make one to honor the cardinal that sits outside our window each day.

    1. I have not seen your work before but these animals are just so cute! I am new to the winter bloghop, what fun. I would like to have the pattern giveaway. I am enjoying visiting the different authors.

  3. I love cardinals…I see them in Maui where we spend our winters away from the Canadian cold winter.

  4. Love your pattern! Perfect gift for parents. They’ve named a pair of cardinals “Gracie & Freddie” that come to their bird feeder.

  5. It’s funny the things that remind you of someone you love, who’s gone. When I saw your cardinal pillows I thought of my mom, who was a very humble person, who never would have bragged about anything about herself. But she had an appreciation for beauty and one reason for that was she had a great sense of color. I saw it in the clothes she made for me, when she chose beautiful fabric and put together lovely combinations. I recognize it now when I see the things she loved–cardinals, roses, canaries–and am struck by their beautiful, vibrant colors. So, thanks for sparking a memory, one that brought tears to my eyes.

    1. Beth, your message is so touching. Everytime I see a cardinal, I take it as a sign that my mom is saying “hello”. She also loved cardinals.

  6. Thank you for the cardinal pattern. Cardinals are always a bright spot of color in the cold, snowy and drab winter,

  7. The cardinals are the perfect winter decoration for your living room. Keep on sewing.

  8. Your designs are always fun to look at and very easy to sew. I have two of your books and have made several patterns.

  9. Your cardinal pattern is perfect!! My hubby feeds the birds in the winter, and we have counted up to 12 male cardinals at a time. The feeder is in a tree right off of our deck, so you can see it from our kitchen. I’d love to make these cardinals for him.

  10. I love your cardinal pillows. I enjoy watching a cardinal couple outside my sewing room window flying in to rest on my lilac bush.

  11. I’ve never seen a cardinal in real life, but your sweet pattern brings it to life. Your pillows are so beautiful and look like a nice way to decorate a room. I love all your patterns and how amazing you are with paper piecing. Thank you for sharing!

  12. Love your projects. When we lived in Illinois, we saw them all the time. I miss seeing them here at our newish home in Alabama.

  13. I love seeing cardinals all year long. They do remind me of loved ones that have passed. I love seeing a male and female – I feel like my my Mom & Dad have stopped to visit.

    1. Thank you Nancy! I made these pillows first for my friend, then again for my mother in law. Loved them so much that I finally had to make a set for my living room!

  14. Hi Marney! Beautiful cardinal pillows and the little red buttons are the perfect addition. I have a pair of cardinals that live in the tree right outside my window at work. I can’t hear them sing when it is too chilly to open the window, but I often see them enjoying the red berries on the tree. The berries stand out as much as they do to catch your eye, so I love that you added that little touch. ~smile~ Roseanne

  15. Beautiful cardinals, I remember feeding them during winter, love their cheerful colours! Those pillows are great!

  16. Hi Marney,
Winter Blues is right!!! This year my depression seems worse than usual so I have
to keep myself busy with the things I love to do.
I LOVE cardinals so I’m hoping I win the free pattern. I can stand in my dining room watching the cardinals in my back yard for a long, long time. They are so beautiful!
I have hung birdhouses in the front of my house. They don’t visit the houses but they land on my trees and fence quite often. My cats have a seat in the window and love to watch them too!
Love all your patterns and thanks for listening.
    Cindy

  17. Nothing does blues better than blue with a bright red cardinal on it. Yours is the perfect touch. JoAnn’s has had some of the best sparkly fabrics this year. You might just be seeing more of the glitzy stuff later this week in the hop! LOL!!

  38. Your designs are always great, but this just might be the best! Cardinals and sparkly blue fabric combined remind me a snowy winter in northern BC where a great bunch of ladies taught me to quilt with a machine. One of those ladies gifted me a table runner with cardinals on the fabric. I always look forward to bringing it out every winter.

  39. Love it and all your designs! The cardinals can carry on after the Christmas season right through winter.

    1. Isn’t that great about cardinals? They work all winter. No need to take them down after Christmas.

  40. I love cardinals – maybe because it is a bird I can always identify – or maybe just because! You work always makes me smile and I have made quite a few of your patterns, and you used my Percy as a model for one of your patterns – such an honor. Best to you!

  41. Love your creativity! Use of the cardinals means things can stay up all winter. Thanks for sharing your designs & creativity with all of us!

  42. Cardinals always remind me of my boys. Cardinals were the high school mascots. Boys are all grown up now and moved away but Cardinals alway make me smile.

  43. Cardinals are quite common here in Ohio, and started me on a life-long hobby of birdwatching. Yours are wonderful! Thank you for a chance to win your pattern.

  44. Beautiful! I’d love to make a runner or pillows for my Mom, she loves birds. Mom has lots of bird feeders and watches them daily.
    Great job!
