Jolly Jack O Lanterns

It’s my favorite time of year…I love decorating for Fall.

Fall Garland

I love these paper pieced Jack O Lanterns. They look so cute with my garland and wreath.

Jack O Lantern Table Topper

These jolly pumpkins are fun to sew.

My JACK O LANTERN TABLE TOPPER pattern is fun to make.

Look how cute the pumpkins would look with some of my other Halloween blocks…

My clever customer Sharon added my GHOST BLOCKS with a pumpkin for an adorable table runner!

FREE HALLOWEEN BLOCKS

Visit ETSY to find my FREE HALLOWEEN BLOCKS. Be aware that any item I sell on Etsy I am charged 20 cents, even if they are FREE. Therefore, I have to charge my customers the 20 cents or it would cost me a fortune to list a free pattern 🙁

I’d love to see how you are decorating for Fall!

BABY SHARK QUILT

What could be cuter than a baby shark. Since sharks are all the rage, how about 3 sharks?

Baby Shark Quilt

This is such a super simple baby quilt, that can be assembled easily in a weekend.

Baby Shark

Yes, those teeth are created with rick rack. If your “baby” is under 2 years old, you may want to create the eyes with appliqued fabric rather than my favorite eyes done with buttons.

SHARK ATTACK QUILT

This is my son’s favorite quilt, SHARK ATTACK.

Six funky little sharks! Again, the teeth are made from rick rack and the eyes from buttons.

Have a lovely week!

Christmas Cats In July

Welcome to my 12 Days of Christmas in July web post. Thanks to Sarah Craig at Confessions of a Fabric Addict for organizing such a delightful Blog Hop. Join us from July 14 through 25 as we share clever Christmas ideas with you.

If you are at all familiar with my paper pieced designs, you know that I love designing animal images for quilts, table runners, pillows, etc. Some of my customers have been asking for paper pieced Christmas cats. I thought this would be a great time to share my newest table runner: CHRISTMAS CATS. This pattern is available on ETSY now, or try winning one below.

Christmas Cats

This widely grinning kitty is Christmas Kitty.

Next is Merry Mouser.

And last is Yuletide Tabby.

If you are new to paper piecing, watch my free tutorials PAPER PIECING TUTORIAL #1 on how to paper piece a segment.

And PAPER PIECING TUTORIAL #2 on how to sew segments together.

Rick rack is a super cute addition to any table runner or quilt. I have a great tip for adding the rick rack. This is done after the runner is quilted.

  1. Pin the rick rack over the ditch between the sashing and the outer border, starting in the center at the bottom of the runner.

2. At the corner, flip the rick rack over to the opposite side and pivot at the corner (similar to how binding is attached. Rick rack has no right or wrong side.

3. Continue to pin rick rack around the remaining 3 sides of the runner. Overlap the tails slightly. Sew in place down the center of the rick rack through all layers of the runner.

And now for the GIVE-AWAYS. The 12 Days of Christmas in July is offering the first Give-Away to win a FAT QUARTER BUNDLE FROM FIGO FABRICS. This is their new winter line called Wintertide.

Furry Friends from Made By Marney

Two more adorable pups have been added to my paper pieced dog block collection. Betty sent me photos of her sweet AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD to inspire me to create this new dog block.

Australian Shepherd

Here is a side by side comparison photo of my block and Betty’s pup.

I love how expressive he turned out! Find the pattern HERE on Etsy.

It was also brought to my attention that I did not have an IRISH SETTER in the collection.

Irish Setter

Making an image that has wavy or curly hair is very difficult in paper piecing. It is all an illusion, made from straight seams. I have always loved the beautiful fur on an Irish Setter, and am pretty in love with his soft wavy ears. You can find this cutie HERE on Etsy.

Skunked!

I love my customers. They constantly motivate me. Kelly asked me to create a SKUNK BLOCK.

Creating paper pieced animals is one of my strong points, so this was a joy to create.

SKUNK

This Skunk Block would look great in my Forest Friends pattern, along with the other sweet woodsy animals.

All this designing has made me tired…

Here is an Owl Tote and a Fox Tote created by another customer. Mary is using the animals from Forest Friends for her handy totes.

Owl Tote

Fox Tote

Now do you see why I love my customers so much? They are super creative!

This Hedgehog Block was paper pieced with the coolest background color.

Instead of adding buttons, this customer used satin stitching for the eyes and nose. Super cute, and a great idea for a baby quilt.

Keep sharing your awesome photos! AND, if you are in northern Wisconsin this Saturday or Sunday, visit me at the Northwoods Quilters Quilt Show in Marinette. I better take lots of northwoods patterns.

Unicorn Love

Magical and mystical unicorns…everybody loves them!

Unicorn Quilt

This adorable Unicorn Quilt measures 34″ x 41 1/2″. The unicorn is paper pieced; the flowers and alphabet letters are applique.

The unicorn is very easy to paper piece, and is great for a beginner. This unicorn would also make a super cute pillow. The alphabet letters and flowers are included in the pattern.

Unicorn Block

If you are looking for a smaller project, this paper pieced Unicorn block measures 8″ x 8″ unfinished. Here’s an idea of what it might look like in a pillow.

Have a magical week! I will be vending at the Mukwonago Quilt Show (Wisconsin) this Saturday and Sunday. I’d love to chat if you can stop by.

Ribbit, Ribbit

This was such an exciting week! My visit to F&W Media, home of the top quilting magazines, was so inspiring!

Boyfriend Tom (left), Mary (AKA Marney), and brother Jim (right)

When I was visiting my brother Jim who lives near Golden, CO, I asked my friends at F & W Media if I could stop by for a visit.

Mary with Lori Baker

Lori Baker, Acquisitions Editor, was there to meet me at the door and give me a tour.

The F & W “Crew”

Here I am with the F & W Crew. F & W Media publishes our favorite quilting books and magazines, like Quilty, Quilting, Quiltmaker, Easy Quilts, Quilting Quickly, Quick Quilts, Quilting Arts, and Modern Patchwork.

We sat down and had a lovely discussion about paper piecing, designing patterns, life, and great places to eat!

Here’s one of F & W’s many publications. My “RIBBIT, RIBBIT” pattern is in the Spring 2019 issue of EASY QUILTS. That’s my froggie on the cover!

This cute little table topper measures 15″ x 15″, and is so fun to paper piece. A great pattern for beginners! Those wonky eyes are made from buttons.

A great vacation full of exploring new vistas, eating at fun restaurants, and meeting new friends. As Tom and I are heading home to Wisconsin, I want to send a big thank you to F & W for the warm welcome!

Pattern Blocks for St. Patrick’s Day

I have some fun paper pieced pattern blocks designed for March. Most of them are St. Patrick’s Day related. Leprechaun Block

His nose is a fabric yo yo, but could also be a button. Love that lopsided grin!

Luck Block

The secret of this block is to find 4 fabulous green fabrics.

Shamrock Block

Even though this shamrock only has 3 leaves, it is mighty lucky!

And Pot of Gold Block.

These “gold coins” are actually fabric yo yos, but could also be gold buttons.

One of my sweet customers shared this photo of a Leprechaun table runner, using my blocks. This is adorable. I love to post my customer’s creations using my pattern blocks, so please share your photos at: maryannhertel@gmail.com

Thanks for stopping by!
