The Newest Doggie Patterns

If you have been looking for some new pooch patterns, here you go. My most popular dog pattern is DOGS ONLY

This popular dog quilt offers 11 block patterns for only $10. If purchased separately, the block patterns would cost $33. Such a good deal to buy the quilt pattern. Since Dogs Only is so popular , I thought it was time to design another quilt based on pooches….

My DOG LOVER QUILT has 12 block patterns and the paw print pattern for the corners. That is 13 block patterns for $15. So much cheaper than buying them separately. I had so much fun designing these cuties! PRESS HERE to watch a video with more details for this quilt.

Here are some of my newest dog blocks; designed by request, but now also available to you.

New and Adorable Paper Pieced Puppies

I’ve been busy designing paper pieced dog blocks and quilts for my friends and customers. It’s been exciting putting together a collection of blocks for one specific breed. These are some of my recent collections…

Inspired by my friend’s beloved Cavalier King Charles, all 4 of these blocks were used in a quilt and some pillows for an auction. Thanks to Sara for providing this photo. You can find these Cavaliers in my ETSY SHOP. I currently have 160 dog blocks to choose from.

My niece Mandy has a Doberman which inspired this lap quilt for a Christmas gift.

The lap quilt pattern is made with “minky” to make it soft and cozy. It’s designed for a human, but it looks like her doberman is enjoying a comfy moment, too!

Doberman Lap Quilt Pattern is HERE. Isn’t she cute?

My nephew has a lovely Golden Retriever named Maggie. This is the quilt I made, but I found I loved designing Goldens so much, that I ended up with many more blocks than I needed. You can see them all HERE.

Here’s a tip for quilting over a paper pieced image. My “go to” method is to mark horizontal lines about an inch apart with a Frixion pen. Using a transparent thread, quilt over each line. Make sure you are using a thread that is a mono-filament and will not melt when ironed or laundered.

My favorites are YLI Monofilament and Superior Threads MonoPoly. Slow down when using an invisible thread to reduce breaking.

I’d love to see some quilts that you have made using any of my dog patterns. You can email the photos to me at: maryannhertel@gmail.com

What’s New?

These are some of the new blocks I have been creating. Most of them were customer requests.

HAPPY PIT BULL

HAPPY PIT BULL is a rendition of a customer’s pet. Although pit bulls are not my favorite breed, I’m loving them more now that I have this sweetie. I love this image so much, I put it on the back of a shirt. No one will mess with me now.

SHELTIE BLOCK

This SHELTIE is Caroline’s pet named Skittles. Adorable!

MASTIFF BLOCK

This is a very serious dog, the MASTIFFF. And this is a sweetheart of a dog…

CUTE PUPPY BLOCK

CUTE PUPPY reminds me of a beagle, but she is actually no specific breed.

BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG

And finally the BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG…what a cutie.

On the request of some special customers, I have designed 2 springtime Gnomes…

BUMBLE BEE GNOME
LADYBUG GNOME

The BUMBLE BEE GNOME and the LADYBUG GNOME would be great as a set of potholders or pillows for spring and summer!

What patterns are you looking for Spring and Summertime?

Dogs, Dogs, Dogs…For a Good Cause.

This adorable handmade paper pieced DOG QUILT is being offered in an online auction, benefits to go to the Street Dog Foundation.

The quilt was lovingly paper pieced by Janet, using my dog patterns, of course! She donated all of the materials and her time for the Street Dog Foundation’s benefit. It would be great if you would show your support by placing a bid on this lovely quilt in the next 2 weeks, after which bidding will end.

HOLIDAY GOLDEN RETRIEVER

And speaking of dog patterns, here are my 4 newest dogs just in time for the holidays… Holiday Golden Retriever reminds me of my first dog, a lovable Golden.

Holiday Pug

This Holiday Pug block was inspired by my Pug loving customers. There are so many of them!

Holiday French Bulldog

The Holiday French Bulldog block would make a super cute pillow for Christmas, or anytime!

Holiday Dachshund

The Holiday Dachshund was inspired by a good friend who loves them.

I would love to see what you can create with these new holiday blocks…please share photos! Here are some of my customers latest photo shares…

Doggie Tree Skirt

I am in love with Marilyn’s Doggie Tree Skirt. This tree skirt could be made by substituting my dog blocks for the Christmas blocks in my Christmas Tree Skirt Sampler.

Rescue, It Does A Body Good

Can you believe this cute as can be rescue quilt created by Gina? Love it!

This is Judy being creative. She took my Pit Bull block pattern and revised it to create an image that looks exactly like her dog. I am so proud of my very talented customers!

Here’s a great version of Doggies in black and white fabrics from Bobbi. Can’t wait to see what you are making from my dog blocks!

Getting Ready for My Valentine…

It’s time to dig out my Valentine pillows. I’m looking forward to some chocolate and flowers! Right?

This is a Valentine doggie block I designed in 2019.

BE MINE PUPPY

This cutie I designed this year…

EYE LOVE U PUPPY

Wouldn’t these blocks make cute pillows or potholders? I’m going to try to sew them up before Valentine’s Day.

Both patterns can be found in my ETSY SHOP. I’d love to see what you can create using these sweet pups.

The winner of my CARDINAL WALL HANGING pattern is Nancy B. Congrats to her!

Dog Quilt Blocks

Three new doggie quilt blocks designed by customer request.

Lisa sent this photo of Atilla Bear the Chow Chow, hoping for a paper pieced pattern.

Atilla Bear

This is the finished CHOW CHOW PAPER PIECED PATTERN. I was a bit timid when approaching this design, as Chow Chows have lots of fur, and it is always a challenge to represent fur in paper piecing, but still maintaining a fairly simple pattern.

Another customer requested a boxer pattern. Here’s a photo of her pup. Isn’t he a cutie?

I decided to tackle this breed from both angles. Here’s my first attempt in profile.

Boxer 1

This BOXER PATTERN is super easy. But my customer wanted something with more detail, so I designed this…

Boxer 2

The BOXER 2 PATTERN has more detail. Although the ears are a bit tricky, I do love how it turned out.

Which one is your favorite new dog pattern?

Sewn by Donna

Thanks to Donna for sharing a photo of this adorbs quilt she just finished using my DOGS ONLY pattern, plus a few more of my doggies…

Thanks for all the participants in last month’s Row-Along blog hop. Congrats to Gina, the winner of my free Unicorn Quilt pattern.

Going to the Dogs….

One of my proudest moments in 2018 was the creation of the “Doggie In The Window” quilt. The Orange County Quilters Guild in California contacted me in 2017 about using my dog block patterns to create their next Guide Dogs Of America charity quilt. I was thrilled!

Doggie In The Window

The hard working guild members used 30 of my different dog breeds to construct this 60″x 70″ masterpiece. The quilt traveled throughout the US during 2018, and was raffled to a lucky winner in December. This is their big yearly contribution to their favorite charity, Guide Dogs of America.

Close Up

I have been designing paper pieced dog blocks since 2014 and now have about 50 different breeds. This obsession started as a fun way to connect with my customers. They would email me photos of their pets, and I would try to recreate their breed in a quilt block.

I created this quilt pattern, “Dogs Only” after designing my first 11 dog breeds. Then all **** broke loose, and I was flooded from all over the world with requests from customers who wanted a specific breed to substitute into this pattern. Here are some of my favorites…

King Charles Cavalier

Corgi
Collie, (pillow sewn by my friend Julie)
Pomeranian

Do you see what I mean by my “obsession”? You can see many more doggies on my Etsy shop….and if you see a breed I am missing, drop me an email at:

maryannhertel@gmail.com

If it is significantly different than a block I already have, I might be tempted to continue with my fave obsession!

Meet The Designer-Made By Marney

What an exciting way to start 2019. Quiltmaker magazine is featuring a new designer each month. The article is called “Meet The Designers”. I was thrilled when asked to be their first featured artist. This issue, the January/February 2019, just came out.

Here is the “Meet The Designers” article.

I also have a quilt pattern featured in this issue.

PUPPY LUV is a sweet Valentine’s quilt for doggie lovers. This 41″x 41″ quilt would also make a cute wall hanging.

The paper pieced puppies are 7 1/2″x 7 1/2″ finished blocks. They would make an adorable pillow, too!

What a great way to start the new year.

More Dog Paper Piecing Patterns

One of my favorite projects is highlighting a paper pieced dog block in a toss pillow. It’s such a great way to add a bit of color to a couch, chair, or bed. It’s also a great conversation piece.

This PUG pillow is the first dog pillow I created. I just love it so much! Not sure if it is the huge eyes, the little tongue, or just all the neutral gray colors, but everytime I walk past this little guy, I smile.

This sweet COLLIE pillow was made by Julie. I absolutely adore the bandana fabric she used for the background. It’s the perfect compliment to the Collie’s black fur.

Here is Kelsey’s awesome creation! She made a great rendition of an “Andy Warhol” pillow, using my CORGI pattern. I LOVE this pillow.

Here are a few more of my newest dog designs. BICHON FRISE

CAIRN TERRIER

BLUE HEELER

WEIMARANER

And, last but not least, the RED MIN. Needless to say, some of these breeds I had never heard of until a customer requested a design. So please, keep those requests coming. It is such a fun challenge, and I am learning a new appreciation for the subtle differences between different dog breeds.
