A few weeks back, I designed this LOON ON THE LAKE paper piecing pattern.
Every year 2 loons inhabit the lake near my cabin in upper Wisconsin. I love to listen to them singing at night.
I liked my loon block so much that I decided to design more “birds on the lake”. This is SWAN ON THE LAKE. The dragonflies add some depth to the block.
GOOSE ON THE LAKE reminds me of all the Canada Geese that come to visit in the fall.
And finally MALLARD ON THE LAKE. It’s always exciting to see my first mallard of Spring.
I haven’t actually used my blocks in any projects. I plan to make a set of pillows for my cabin. I would also like to add more birds to this collection so I could complete a full quilt. I am working on a PELICAN right now. Can you help me think of any other “water birds”? They don’t have to be specifically northwoods. Which is your favorite block?
Dinosaurs are such a great theme for your kid’s room. My paper pieced Dinosaur Quilt was so much fun to design.
As I chose the fabrics for my sample, I made a concerted effort to use some complementary colored fabric somewhere in my quilt…
The complements blue and orange worked perfectly in my Spinosaurus. You can see from the photos above how each dinosaur is comprised of 4 paper pieced blocks. In an effort to make this pattern as easy as possible for my customers, I am using a tiny black and white striped fabric for his teeth…because who wants to paper piece all those tiny teeth!
Here is Spinosaurus all connected.
Notice how the Pterodactyl’s teeth are made from a chevron fabric. So easy!
The dinosaur words were added as part of the quilting. I used a satin stitch. This could have also been achieved by machine embroidery.
My good friend Shelley framed the dinosaurs she paper pieced. They are hanging in her brand new grandson’s nursery. And guess what his name is??? REX! Love it 🙂

Congratulations to Marsha. She is the winner of my “Scalloped Heart Pillow” pattern give-away.
My sweet friend Marilyn just shared a photo of her version of the scalloped heart. It is so lovely.
She also made a gift sack with my “Be Mine Puppy” block pattern. Too cute! There have been so many requests for holiday designs, that I am now working on blocks for every occasion.
This table runner and the gift sacks were also made by Marilyn. Didn’t she do a super cute job with my “Easter Collection“? I love when my customers continue to challenge me, and then inspire me!
Thanks to all who participated in last weeks Valentine Blog Hop. I enjoyed all of your comments.
This pattern is a nice mix of beginner blocks and intermediate blocks. For paper piecing directions and tips watch my free tutorials on my Video and Tutorial page right here on the website.

Some of my favorite paper pieced dog patterns have been inspired by my sweet customers and friends.
This Pit Bull design was inspired by the photo below, sent to me by a loyal customer.
What a sweet heart of a pit bull! I’ve never owned a pit bull, and, admittedly, it wasn’t on my list of dog patterns to tackle. But when I saw this adorable pup, I was in love.
These pillows were made by Edie Fagg, a super sweet customer, using my Pit Bull pattern. I love to see how others interpret my patterns, choosing their own fabrics to express themselves in a creative manner.
Here’s a pillow created by Julie Rosenthal. Love that tiny checked fabric on the dog’s face! Super cute choice, Julie!
Please keep sharing your photos. It’s so much fun to see what you are creating.
You can find more dog patterns on my Etsy and Craftsy sites. Above are 2 more patterns, Chihuahua and Corgi.
After spending a relaxing week at my cabin in norther Wisconsin, I was going “looney”. No, not crazy looney… I now have a pair of loons at Morgan Lake. Prior to this, there was only 1 lonely loon every year. Falling asleep every night to that soulful loon’s call was magical. I was motivated to create “Loon on the Lake“.
I will add this to my collection of other northwoods paper pieced animals.
The 2 Breezy Butterfly blocks pictured above can be found on my Craftsy and Etsy shops for FREE. These paper pieced patterns can be used for summer potholders, pillows, a table runner or even a butterfly quilt.
I am offering these free patterns as a thank you to my loyal customers…and if you haven’t been a customer in the past, I would value your patronage in the future. I would also love you to SUBSCRIBE if you have not previously done so.
Here is an adorable version of my “Dogs Only” paper pieced pattern done by Dave.Very sweet, Dave! I like how you used the option to use fabric pieces for the dog’s eyes instead of buttons. The red border really makes the animals “pop”. Great job!
Here is the original pattern.
DOGS ONLY QUILT
I love to share projects my friends have made using my patterns 🙂
I have been designing dog blocks for a few months, so FINALLY I have something to offer to all of you cat lovers! The Crazy Cats Paper Pieced Quilt has 12 expressive cats. My challenge was to create a quilt using all secondary colors; orange, green, and violet. As an art teacher, I always like to use color families successfully. The Crazy Cats Quilt pops with fun color, but could easily be done in neutral tones, too.
Here are 3 of my favorites. I lucked out and found the perfect cream background fabric with tiny orange, green, and violet dots.
Here’s the easiest block: This is an easy to construct quilt , and would be great for beginning paper piecers.
I know many friends who will go crazy for these “Kitty and Pup Potholders”.
I had so much fun paper piecing these two. The blocks couldn’t be easier and would be great for beginners. I used buttons for my eyes, as I intend to flip the potholders over and use the back if I need to set something hot on them. But the eyes could also be done with appliqued fabric circles.
This kitty is too sweet! The kitty who ate the cream.
And how cute is he? Doesn’t he look like he just got into mischief?
