Something new….

After spending the last 3 weekends vending at local quilt shows, I am free this week to play with some new patterns.

I met a sweet customer named Lynn at my last show and she requested a paper pieced Panda pattern.

This PANDA turned out so cute, I plan to create a Panda pillow.

Another customer, Dori, is a dog lover. Her favorite breed is Shiba Inu. I had never heard of this type of dog, so I had to do some investigating.

The SHIBA INU is an ancient, Japanese breed.

I also recieved a message from a longtime friend who wanted me to design a Retriever dog quilt for her new grandson. I have a GOLDEN RETRIEVER block, but I wanted more than one retriever in the quilt.

Golden Retriever

I designed another RETRIEVER to add to the quilt. I decided this dog should be in profile.

Retriever

Here is the finished Retriever Quilt.

Retriever Quilt

The first dog is a pup that I thought could pass for a retriever. It is HAPPY DOG from the CATS N DOGS pattern.

Happy Easter to all!

Going to the Dogs….

One of my proudest moments in 2018 was the creation of the “Doggie In The Window” quilt. The Orange County Quilters Guild in California contacted me in 2017 about using my dog block patterns to create their next Guide Dogs Of America charity quilt. I was thrilled!

Doggie In The Window

The hard working guild members used 30 of my different dog breeds to construct this 60″x 70″ masterpiece. The quilt traveled throughout the US during 2018, and was raffled to a lucky winner in December. This is their big yearly contribution to their favorite charity, Guide Dogs of America.

Close Up

I have been designing paper pieced dog blocks since 2014 and now have about 50 different breeds. This obsession started as a fun way to connect with my customers. They would email me photos of their pets, and I would try to recreate their breed in a quilt block.

I created this quilt pattern, “Dogs Only” after designing my first 11 dog breeds. Then all **** broke loose, and I was flooded from all over the world with requests from customers who wanted a specific breed to substitute into this pattern. Here are some of my favorites…

King Charles Cavalier

Corgi
Collie, (pillow sewn by my friend Julie)
Pomeranian

Do you see what I mean by my “obsession”? You can see many more doggies on my Etsy shop….and if you see a breed I am missing, drop me an email at:

maryannhertel@gmail.com

If it is significantly different than a block I already have, I might be tempted to continue with my fave obsession!

Ribbit, Ribbit

This was such an exciting week! My visit to F&W Media, home of the top quilting magazines, was so inspiring!

Boyfriend Tom (left), Mary (AKA Marney), and brother Jim (right)

When I was visiting my brother Jim who lives near Golden, CO, I asked my friends at F & W Media if I could stop by for a visit.

Mary with Lori Baker

Lori Baker, Acquisitions Editor, was there to meet me at the door and give me a tour.

The F & W “Crew”

Here I am with the F & W Crew. F & W Media publishes our favorite quilting books and magazines, like Quilty, Quilting, Quiltmaker, Easy Quilts, Quilting Quickly, Quick Quilts, Quilting Arts, and Modern Patchwork.

We sat down and had a lovely discussion about paper piecing, designing patterns, life, and great places to eat!

Here’s one of F & W’s many publications. My “RIBBIT, RIBBIT” pattern is in the Spring 2019 issue of EASY QUILTS. That’s my froggie on the cover!

This cute little table topper measures 15″ x 15″, and is so fun to paper piece. A great pattern for beginners! Those wonky eyes are made from buttons.

A great vacation full of exploring new vistas, eating at fun restaurants, and meeting new friends. As Tom and I are heading home to Wisconsin, I want to send a big thank you to F & W for the warm welcome!

Sew Cute and Clever Farm & Forest Friends

It’s here! My newest paper piecing book, Sew Cute and Clever Farm and Forest Friends (longest title ever, right???) has arrived fresh from the printers. And, as advertised, it is as cute as can be!

Oooops…bad hair day! Oh well, who needs great hair when they are sewing…

This book contains 16 whimsical paper pieced animal blocks AND 6 projects for your home decorating needs.

As you can see, these blocks were designed with simplicity in mind. They are EASY PEASY! This FOX is cute as can be, and here are a few more that are not pictured on the cover of the book.

This quizzical OWL is ready for a pillow or potholder, don’t you think?

This adorable PUPPY PILLOWCASE was designed with a special little boy in mind!

I especially love this octagonal table runner. Any 4 blocks work because all the blocks and projects are interchangeable.

The BENCH PILLOW can also be made into a TABLE RUNNER, like this one. This runner reminds me of growing up on the farm…

I am loving this fun and colorful book and so will you! With step by step paper piecing directions included, you will be piecing like a pro in no time.

Find this book, and all of my books and patterns on ETSY.

Meet The Designer-Made By Marney

What an exciting way to start 2019. Quiltmaker magazine is featuring a new designer each month. The article is called “Meet The Designers”. I was thrilled when asked to be their first featured artist. This issue, the January/February 2019, just came out.

Here is the “Meet The Designers” article.

I also have a quilt pattern featured in this issue.

PUPPY LUV is a sweet Valentine’s quilt for doggie lovers. This 41″x 41″ quilt would also make a cute wall hanging.

The paper pieced puppies are 7 1/2″x 7 1/2″ finished blocks. They would make an adorable pillow, too!

What a great way to start the new year.

3 Dogs and 1 Sassy Cat

Here’s one of my favorite table runner patterns for Christmas, 3 Dogs and 1 Sassy Cat. Please excuse me for reposting this photo, as I have already shared it with many of you, but it is so darn cute and a Christmas pattern that my many dog and cat loving friends adore.

Here’s my friend Lana’s version, made into a wall hanging. Love it!

Lana used some lovely fabrics for her version.

Here is a close up of each pet…

Stocking Hat Dog

Candy Cane Dog

Turtleneck Dog

Sassy Cat

If I had to choose a favorite, it would have to be Candy Cane Dog…how about you?

Well, you know how one good design can lead to another? 3 Cats and 1 Dog With a Bone was a natural follow up.

And my favorite in this group has to be the Dog With a Bone.

Happy Holiday to you!

Paper Pieced Turkey Pattern…Gobble, Gobble

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I’m getting out my meager amount of Turkey Day decorations. For some reason, I don’t have nearly as many November goodies in my stash as I have for Halloween and Christmas.

This googly eyed TURKEY is a fun block to add to a pillow or potholder.

If you are looking for a cute and quick project for Christmas, I just finished this ELFY SHOE block pattern.

One of my sweet customers requested a block that would be similar to my WITCHY PILLOW . Remember, I try to keep all of my blocks the same size, so any block pattern fits into any pattern. You always give me the best ideas!

Congratulations to Nancy, the winner of my Cat’s Meow Quilt pattern. Thanks so much for everyone who participated in the Pick A Pumpkin Blog Hop last week. I loved all the comments, and wish I could have replied to all of them. Thanks so much for all the love you shared!

Pick A Pumpkin Blog Hop Day One

Thanks for joining me today for the first day of the PICK A PUMPKIN BLOG HOP, sponsored by Carla Henton from Creatin in the Sticks. I have been working on one of my favorite subjects, paper pieced black cats and pumpkins. Don’t miss my GIVE-AWAY…you’ll find it at the end of this post.

CAT ON A PUMPKIN is an easy block with nice large pieces. Find a lovely orange fabric with some interesting texture for that luscious, fat pumpkin.

CURIOUS CAT has a quizzical expression.

CAT WITH A HAT is wearing a wonky witch hat.

MOONLIGHT CAT glows in the shimmering moonlight.

Use the cats alone as wall hangings or pillows, or put them all together to create a charming quilt. I call this the CAT’S MEOW QUILT.

WIN THIS PATTERN…Leave a comment for a chance to win this paper pieced pattern. Make sure your email is included in the comment so I can contact the winner. Also, make my day by SUBSCRIBING to my website.

Find more fun fall paper pieced projects on my ETSY or CRAFTSY shops.

Christmas In July Blog Hop, Free Tutorial AND a Give-Away

Welcome to the “Christmas In July” Blog Hop. I am offering a FREE tutorial on paper piecing AND a Give-Away at the end of this post.

Thank you to Carol Swift from Just Let Me Quilt for hosting this blog hop. She has worked countless hours to organize this hop. Thank you, Carol!

I am offering a FREE TUTORIAL on 3 tasks…1) How to paper piece a simple block using my Snowman block from my Sew Yourself A Merry Little Christmas book, 2) How to paper piece a combination block, and 3) How to assemble the Gift Sack pattern in my book.

Paper piecing is simply a “sew by number” technique. You work from a paper pattern, sewing right through the paper and fabric to create the image. It is my FAVORITE way to add an image to a project.

So first, let’s take a look at sewing the simple block. I am including a download of every step in the paper piecing process to complete this Snowman. Click  Workshop-Step-by-Step.pptx (697 downloads ) to download the free tutorial.

Also included in the tutorial are 2) How to paper piece a combination block,  Polar Bear block.

AND a tutorial on 3) How to assemble the Gift Sack pattern. All of these patterns are found in my Sew Yourself A Merry Little Christmas book. Available on Made By Marney on Etsy.  Also available on Amazon.

One lucky visitor will win a FREE Sew Yourself A Merry Little Christmas book. To enter the raffle, leave a comment on this post. Make sure your email is included in the comment. Due to the extremely high cost of postage overseas, I am only able to mail this book to a customer from the US. If someone wins from a foreign country, I will download this Christmas pattern to them, instead of the book: Must Be Santa Table Runner/Pillow pattern. Winner will be announced Saturday, July 28.

More Woodland Animals

Often, my customers like to substitute different animal blocks in my patterns to get a more unique quilt. Here are 2 new paper pieced blocks that would work well in my Forest Friends quilt pattern.

This friendly Brown Bear is an 8″x 8″ unfinished block. Most of my paper pieced blocks are this size and can be mixed and matched into any of my patterns.

This Fawn would make a cute addition as well. I designed the fawn after finding a newborn fawn curled under a tree in my yard at the cabin. It was resting there for the day, and was later reunited with it’s mother.

So adorable! It laid in this position all day, never moving. Mother deer came in the night to gather her offspring and move on.

It’s always fun to be creative and make your own composition using the animals of your choice. Are there any other woodland animals that you would like to see in this quilt?
